This summer semester, the LMU Eye Clinic's collection is on display in the exhibition area of the Fachbibliothek Philologicum at the University Library. The exemplary exhibits are accompanied by a small selection of objects from the University Library's historical collection, dating from the late Middle Ages to the 20th century.
The LMU Eye Clinic's collection houses various medical devices and documents that reflect the history of the institution since its founding in 1856. It is the only preserved historical instrument collection of an LMU clinic. The exhibition covers various areas of ophthalmological treatment, including various devices for determining visual acuity, a historical collection of eyeglasses, and lens boxes. The exhibits bear witness to treatment methods that are sometimes very distant—and fortunately outdated—as well as to the development of modern medical instruments. The historical connection between faith and medicine is also illustrated by votive eyes. This provides an insight into more than 500 years of ophthalmology history.
